Brendan Kennelly is well known as a poet, but has also pursued an active career in teaching. He is Professor Emeritus of Modern Literature at Trinity College Dublin, where he taught until 2005. Drawing from the legacy of Irish vernacular poetry, as well as from Ireland’s oral tradition, Kennelly is the author of more than twenty books of poetry. He is also the author of two novels, as well as re-tellings of Antigone, Medea, and The Trojan Women. Among the honors awarded to Kennelly is the Irish PEN Award, presented each year to an Irish-born writer whose body of work represents an outstanding contribution to Irish literature.
