Zotero is a user-friendly tool that helps students and faculty streamline their writing process by creating coherent citations and bibliographies. However, there are times when Zotero may not support the specific citation styles you require. In such cases, you will need to enter those citations manually.
How to add citations manually in Microsoft Word
To enter citations manually, we suggest that you follow the instructions provided by Microsoft Support for inserting footnotes. Please note that using the "insert citation" feature will not allow you to enter citations that Zotero does not support and features style guides that are not up-to-date (for instance, at the time that this guide was written, Microsoft Word only allowed you to insert a citation in the 16th edition of the Chicago Manual of Style when it was in its 18th edition). You should be able to insert footnotes in Microsoft Word while also using Zotero for other citations without problem.
Below, we have listed known citation patterns that Zotero does not support that require manual entry. If you have questions about a pattern that you do not see listed here, please contact Jen Moran (jennifer.moran@bc.edu) or YunJung Kang (yunjung.kang@bc.edu).
When it is time to create your bibliography, you can create one with Zotero, and then insert the entries for the items you manually cited following the format specified by the citation manual you are using.
There are also some theologically-specific citation patterns that can be handled by Zotero, but that require special handling. We have listed those patterns below.
