This guide is an introduction to the basic resources for doing research in theology and for beginning a biblical exegesis paper.

Indexes and Databases

The first five resources focus specifically on tools for finding journal articles and other types of material in theology and religion. The resources which follow them are more general in scope.

ATLA Religion Database with ATLASerials PLUS This link opens in a new window
With coverage beginning in 1949, this is an index to articles, essays, and book reviews. It also includes a scripture index listing articles on particular scriptural passages.

The Catholic Periodical and Literature Index (1967/68-1980)
O’Neill Reference BX800 .A1 C38. Continues Catholic Periodical Index, 1930-66 and The Guide to Catholic Literature, 1888-1967 which are shelved next to it. Material published after 1980 is available online through ATLA.

Based on the extensive theology collection of the Tübingen University Library, this database includes coverage of journals and festschriften in Theology and Religious Studies. The collection includes approximately 2000 periodicals, three fourths of which come from countries other than Germany. This index is the online continuation of Zeitschrifteninhaltsdienst Theologie (O’Neill Index Area/1st Floor BR1 .A1 .Z48).

An index to 1500 periodicals, essay collections, book reviews, and conference proceedings in Classical Studies. Subjects covered include ancient Greek and Latin language and linguistics, Greek and Roman history, literature, philosophy, art, archaeology, religion, mythology, music, science, early Christian texts, numismatics, papyrology, and epigraphy.

A bibliography of all aspects of the European Middle Ages including theology and philosophy.

Open access archive combining the INIST's databases Francis (primarily Humanities and Social Sciences) and Pascal (Science, Technology and Medicine).

JSTOR is a collection of scholarly ebooks and journals across disciplines. The journal archive includes back issues and some current issues.
Periodicals Archive Online This link opens in a new window
Periodicals Archive Online is an archive of hundreds of digitized journals published in the arts, humanities and social sciences. It provides researchers with access to more than 200 years of scholarship, spread across a wide variety of subject areas.
Periodicals Index Online This link opens in a new window
Periodicals Index Online is a database of millions of citations for articles published in the arts, humanities and social sciences, across more than 300 years.

Where's the Article?

If you search a database and the full article's not there, don't despair. Look for the "FindIt" button: or FindIt@BC. Find It will offer help including:

If BC has the full text in another database, you will be taken to a list of databases for the full text.
If BC subscribes to the print journal where the article appeared, the Catalog will say Find in Library and you can check which library or libraries may have the year/issue you need and where it is located.
If the article is not available online or in print at BC, use the link to Request the item. We can usually get the article from another library within a few days and email it to you.
