What is a treatise? For when you need truly in-depth information and primary literature references.

A treatise is a work which aims to cover the topic comprehensively. Individual chapters are authored by recognized authorities in the field, tend to be quite lengthy, and carry an extensive list of references. Here is a small selection of important chemical treatises in the Boston College Libraries collection. Other treatises may be found using a subject search in the library catalog.

Patai's Chemistry of Functional Groups
An important series, now online, with individual volumes (or series of volumes) devoted to comprehensive in-depth discussion of particular functional groups. Often referred to as "Patai".
Comprehensive Organic Synthesis, 2nd ed. Elsevier, 2014.
Detailed coverage of core topics, with over 10,000 schemes and images. Fully revised and updated; important growth areas, including combinatorial chemistry, new technological, industrial, and green chemistry developments.
Comprehensive Organic Name Reactions and Reagents. Wiley, 2009.
Applications, conditions and experimental procedures, reaction schemes, mechanisms, modifications, alternate reactions and limitations.
Stereoselective Synthesis of Drugs and Natural Products (Wiley)
Experimental procedures for stereo-selective synthetic reactions (and mechanisms) applicable to drug targets and natural products.

Despite its daunting size and language (older volumes are in German), this is a foundation reference tool for synthetic chemistry, offering detailed experimental procedures comprehensively and critically evaluated.Ample use of chemical formulae and indexes by substance and experimental procedures make the contents of this many-volume set accessible. This work continues now, in part, as Science of Synthesis. The final two volumes (E23o and E23p) provide a general overview of the work and a synopsis of the structure of Houben-Weyl.
