Adding Library Tutorials to Your Course

:

Add Videos from Canvas Commons

Provide library tutorial videos and quizzes for your students via url links or embedding in Canvas.

Add Videos from Canvas Commons

Canvas Commons is a clearinghouse for sharing content across different departments and institutions. You can find content in the Commons shared publicly from all over the world, from K-12 through graduate level. Any of it can be easily imported into your Canvas courses. (Caution: graded items will automatically be added to your Canvas grade book.) More info on Canvas Commons

A BC Tutorial Video imported from Canvas Commons will be added as a page in your course. This method of adding tutorials allows you to provide links to the content quickly and easily: in Canvas, pages that can be directly linked appear in a sidebar to the right of any editing screen. You could add tutorial videos this way as you draft a Canvas course, and then add links to the content later, without having to search for YouTube url's or recall the location on the library website. If you make "Pages" visible in the left-navigation menu, students can also navigate directly to the video content. More info on Pages

Limit Commons Content to BC Resources

To limit the content to Boston College resources, turn off the "Show Public Resources" slider:

Canvas Commons main screen, with the "Show public resources" slider circled

With that slider off, you should be able to browse for library tutorial content easily.

NOTE: If you want a video (not a quiz), make sure the resource is labeled "video."

Importing a video

When you click on a Canvas Commons resource, you'll see a description and import options. To import the resource into your course(s), select course(s) in the gray box on the right, and click "Import Into Course."
