All About the Libraries

This guide introduces new faculty at Boston College to the services available from the University Libraries.

Welcome to the Boston College Libraries! This guide introduces you to the key services that the libraries provide to help you transition to Boston College and prepare for your classes. You can reach out to your subject librarian for any information that you need.

Accessing Library Services

Your BC username and password will allow you to access all library services, including interlibrary loan and requesting and renewing books. Your Eagle ID serves as your library card and allows you to print in the library.

Course Resources

The Libraries can assist you with building reading lists for your courses. Lists are managed through the Course Resources tool in Canvas. In addition, you can integrate a librarian into your Canvas course site.

Off-campus access

Access online resources including databases, e-journals, and e-books through the library website and Catalog. See our guide to Remote Access for more details.

Library Instruction

The Libraries instruction program supports academics, scholarship, and lifelong learning.  Library instructors teach how to think about information in a global environment and impart lasting skills for making sound, reasoned judgments in the search for and use of information.

The Burns Library Instruction Program supports intellectual inquiry and scholarship through an active engagement with primary and historical resources, in both original and digital formats.

Subject Librarians

Subject Librarians with expertise in the disciplines are assigned to each department and provide support for scholarly research and publishing. They are research partners, developing relationships with faculty and knowledge of their interests. Please make an appointment with your subject librarian to get an introduction to the resources available and the research support they provide.

Build the Collection

New faculty are allotted $2500 from the Libraries' collections budget to be used for one-time purchases (as opposed to ongoing subscription resources). This special funding should be used within the first two years of your arrival at BC. You can ask your subject librarian to acquire the collection materials you need for your research and teaching.
