GIS

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) at Boston College
GIS is a software system that allows data to be mapped at various geographic levels. To the right are interactive internet based mapping tools. B.C. also supports more advanced desktop mapping tools such as ArcGIS. Boston College supports the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in teaching, research and administrative projects. This replacement of American Fact Finder allows you to directly access United States Census data. Use the Advanced Search option to browse available filters, including by topic, year, location and survey.

PolicyMap is used as a data visualization tool in the social sciences, urban studies and planning, real estate and housing analysis, community and economic development, public administration and policy, public health, political science, education, environmental studies, business and finance, economics, statistics and geography, among other areas. Social Explorer This link opens in a new window
Social Explorer is a research tool designed to provide quick and easy access to historical census data and demographic information. It creates maps and reports to help users visually analyze and understand demography and social change throughout history. Currently includes the entire US Census history from 1790 to 2000, all annual updates from the American Community Survey. Users can customize, save, print, and email maps and reports and export them to a variety of programs and statistical packages for further analysis and use in reports and presentations.

500 Cities: Local Data for Better Health
The purpose of the 500 Cities Project is to provide city- and census tract-level small area estimates for chronic disease risk factors, health outcomes, and clinical preventive service use for the largest 500 cities in the United States. These small area estimates will allow cities and local health departments to better understand the burden and geographic distribution of health-related variables in their jurisdictions, and assist them in planning public health interventions. Data can be extracted and used with GIS software
