Migration and Border History

:

Creating a Research Project

This is a short introduction to scholarly and primary sources research in migration and border history at Boston College.

Lay out Your Project

To get started with your research, set out your:

  • When (when are you looking are?)
  • Where (continent(s) and state(s) are you focusing on?)
  • What (topics are you considering?)
  • Who (perspective are you wanting?)

Combine those points to build a research question.

Background Scholarship

Your background research should include books and articles.

Primary Sources

Primary sources are the texts, images, and sounds you use to get as close to your question as possible.

For immgration history, try to combine a few of these such as:

  • Government documents
  • Oral or personal testimony
  • Images
  • NGO reports
