Municipal Governments

This guide describes BC's status in the Federal Depository Library Program and introduces major federal government document resources.

What is Municipal Government?

Local government, or those defined as cities, towns, boroughs (except in Alaska), villages, and townships. The White House provides a useful overview of the difference between State and Local Governments.

Starting Points

Researchers might find access to municipal codes at the municipality’s website or clerk’s office, as well as in the official archives for the municipality’s state.

Municipal Codes

Municipal Codes are the collection of laws passed by a local governing body (often of a county, city, village, township, or other similar governmental subdivision). For more information about researching municipal codes, visit the Library of Congress guide on the topic.
