FAQs

How will this affect links to library resources I've bookmarked or set up on my website/Canvas/course guide?

Most links should redirect automatically, but if they do not, please contact us for assistance in locating what you need.

Will this affect the items I already have in My Library Account?

It won't- everything will transfer over. You might notice a slight cosmetic change on that page, but that's it.

Will this affect Interlibrary Loan?

It will not. You will be able to continue requesting/receiving materials via ILL as usual.

How will this change my Course Reserves?

It won't!

How will it look different?

Honestly it will look pretty much the same. As seen in the below screenshots, the landing page in VE and classic have the same layout. Here's a screenshot of VE in our testing environment:

And here it is as it is now, in Classic:

Has searching changed at all?

A little bit. For power users who are interested in the details of searching functionality, we encourage you to look at ExLibris's Primo VE documentation:

Can I preview the new catalog?

The new catalog can be perused prelaunch at http://library.bc.edu/newcatalog.

What is Primo and why are we upgrading?

Primo is the system that provides an interface to our library catalog. When you do a search, browse the results, and look at your library account- you are using Primo. It is more formally termed a 'discovery layer', as it helps you discover the library's resources, and is produced by Ex Libris. We are currently using Primo Classic, and are upgrading to the newest version, Primo VE.

Ex Libris released Primo VE in mid-2018 and as such it has now been widely tested and adopted by other institutions. It significantly improves upon Primo Classic, our current version of Primo, without disrupting user expectations. The catalog will basically look the same! This initial upgrade will mostly affect the underlying system itself, not the styles and customizations that you are used to. It provides the scaffolding that will let us undertake more enhancement work throughout the fall and beyond.
