We are excited to announce the launch of the newest version of the Boston College Libraries' catalog. We will be updating our version of Primo from Classic to VE.
The overall look and feel of the catalog will remain the same with a few cosmetic differences. Due to improvements on the backend of the system, searching will be improved: faster, more accurate, and with improved searching capabilities. Library staff will be better able to analyze usage of the catalog, which will help us further improve the overall user experience. There are enhanced functionalities that will be available to us on the upgraded system, and we intend to evaluate and make continual improvements throughout the Fall.

Primo is the system that provides an interface to our library catalog. When you do a search, browse the results, and look at your library account- you are using Primo. It is more formally termed a 'discovery layer', as it helps you discover the library's resources, and is produced by Ex Libris. We are currently using Primo Classic, and are upgrading to the newest version, Primo VE.
Ex Libris released Primo VE in mid-2018 and as such it has now been widely tested and adopted by other institutions. It significantly improves upon Primo Classic, our current version of Primo, without disrupting user expectations. The catalog will basically look the same! This initial upgrade will mostly affect the underlying system itself, not the styles and customizations that you are used to. It provides the scaffolding that will let us undertake more enhancement work throughout the fall and beyond.
