Additional Database Search Tips

Finding Cochrane Full Text

Enter the Cochrane Library directly from the BC Libraries website and search by author, title, etc. Cochrane is structured so that links from library databases and catalogs will not work.

Save the Search History

Store search results in a citation manager for the most flexibility.

Find and Use "Hedges" to Save Time

"Hedges" are search strategies compiled by third parties (often librarians) to comprehensively search for topics. Find specific hedges by using your favorite Internet search engine: topic hedge. Add the name of a database (CINAHL, Ovid MEDLINE, PubMed, etc) to improve results.

Search for Drugs, Medications, or Supplements

Keyword searching is a good strategy for finding literature on newer substances, which may be tagged with broad, general subject headings. Check the full "Names and Identifiers" section of PubChem records to find potential keywords.
