Lending

Overview

We are the lending unit of the Boston College O’Neill Library’s interlibrary loan department.

The materials you request are generally retrieved within 24 hours of receipt.  Electronic items are delivered via Odyssey, Article Exchange and Rapid. Book loans are delivered via UPS and USPS.  Those belonging to the Massachusetts Library System will receive books through the Massachusetts Library Courier.

Who we lend to

As part of the reciprocal nature of Interlibrary Loan we share resources with  both national and all libraries both international and national. We lend library to library only. Individuals who would like to request an item from Boston College’s Libraries should use their institution or public library to place a request.

The preferred billing method is IFM (OCLC) or EFTS (DOCLINE)

Exempt: 

  • Massachusetts non-profit libraries
  • Boston Library Consortium (BLC)
  • American Jesuit College and University Libraries (AJCU)
  • Boston Theological Institute (BTI),
  • Massachusetts Library and Information Network (MLIN)
  • Reciprocal agreements entered into with individual libraries.

What can be requested?

We supply loans and copies from O’Neill Library, Bapst Library, Social Work Library, and the Theology and Ministry Library to the academic community as part of the service mission of Boston College. 

Items at the Boston College’s Law Library Collection (BXL) may be requested directly from that library. 

To find which collection houses a particular title, search the catalog.

What cannot be requested?

  • books from the Burns, Educational Resource Center and O'Connor (Weston Observatory) libraries
  • issues of current newspapers and journals
  • bound periodicals
  • tests and measures

Loan Periods & Renewal

Standard Loan Period: 4 weeks

Boston College dissertations and theses:  Copies of dissertations on fiche are available for loan.  Due to embargo periods and author restrictions, not all Boston College dissertations are available for loan.  

No renewals are granted.  Items that are more than 90 days overdue will be billed for a replacement copy. 

Resends

Requests for resends will be honored for 5 days only.

Loss/Replacement

The requesting library is responsible for borrowed materials from the time they leave Boston College library until they have been returned and received by Boston College library. If damage or loss occurs, the requesting library is responsible for compensation or replacement. Current replacement charges: $100
