Boston College Libraries

Guide to the Classical Studies Collections

The collection primarily serves the needs of the Department of Classical Studies, but portions of it are highly important in Philosophy, Theology, and the undergraduate Core. The bibliographer selects materials based on user requests, curricular needs and knowledge of the discipline.

Disciplinary Scope and Collecting Emphases

The primary focus of the collection is ancient Roman and Greek literature, culture, and history, with archaeology as required to support curricular needs for the other areas. Although the main focus of the department is the classical period (476 CE and prior), interdisciplinary needs and the curriculum also include significant attention to late antiquity and the medieval period (Western and Byzantine), as well as Modern Greek literature.
