The Art & Architecture collection housed in the Bapst Library serves the study, teaching, and research needs of faculty and students in the Art, Art History, and Film Department as well as faculty and students from other academic departments engaged in interdisciplinary pursuits, namely English, Philosophy, Theology, History, Romance Languages and Literatures, Classical Studies, etc. The Bapst Library also serves as a source of visual materials for the entire University.
The collection covers the areas of the history of art and architecture from prehistoric times to the present along with museum studies, and photography. Historically special areas of emphasis within the collection were Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque Art and Architecture, America in the Nineteenth and Twentieth centuries, Expressionism, Irish Art, Islamic Art, ecclesiastical art and architecture, and photography. We will continue developing those areas and going forward we will also be increasing our holdings in Asian, African, Carribean, Latin American, and other world art.
Preference is given to materials published by university presses (Yale University Press, Amsterdam University Press, etc.), museums (MET, MOMA, National Gallery, etc.), and reputable art and scholarly publishers, such as Bloomsbury, Brill, Getty Research Institute and Museum, Skira, Art Book DAP, Brepols, Prestel, Hatje Cantz Verlag, IB Tauris, Taschen, Phaidon, Rizzoli, Thames & Hudson, etc.
