Roots of Sociology

Early sociologists were very much interested in the changes wrought by the rapid industrialization and urbanization of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  This is one of the promotional posters for Chaplin's classic 1936 film on the difficulties of adjusting to these changes.

The poster art copyright is believed to belong to the distributor of the film, United Artists (1930s-2003) MK2 Editions (2003-2010) Janus Films/Criterion (2010-present), the publisher of the film or the graphic artist.

Research in Sociology

Research in sociology spans a number of subfields, ranging from popular culture to environmental studies to consumer culture and beyond.  Empirical (primary) research can use either quantitative/statistical methods or qualitative methods.  And sometimes mixed methods are called for, drawing on both of these techniques.

Sociologists draw on many different types of sources to do their research, but it often involves a combination of primary sources and secondary, scholarly works.  This guide includes pages devoted to each of these types of resources.
