Enhanced Access for COVID-19 Emergency

:

HathiTrust Emergency Temporary Access

Resources freely-available during the COVID-19 health emergency

The HathiTrust Emergency Temporary Access Service provides access to digitized items in HathiTrust that correspond to physical books held by BC not currently available due to the temporary disruption in physical access.

Learn how to find and use HathiTrust ebooks or Ask Us anything.

Why is the print version listed as not loanable?

Because of copyright laws, when HathiTrust provides temporary access, our print copy can't be borrowed.

Why can’t I renew books now that there’s a version available online in HathiTrust?

If you have a print copy on loan already, it will not be renewable. Because of copyright laws, we must limit renewals on print copies. Get in touch with Access Services to make alternative arrangements. (notices@bc.edu | 617-552-8038)

All available copies are in use. Why can’t I access the book?

HathiTrust limits access to 1 user at a time for each print copy held by the BC Libraries. A title with 3 copies will allow access for up to 3 users at a time. If you see this message, try again later. Make sure to return your book when you’re done with it so others can use it.

Why don’t I have access to a specific book?

We use our collections data to match our physical copies with HathiTrust’s digitized version. The matches may be incorrect due to inaccurate or out of date information. Please report problems.

How long can I use the book for?

When you access an item via HathiTrust, it is checked out to you for 1 hour. The loan will auto renew if you are still reading it and no one else is trying to use it. Make sure to return your book when you’re done with it so that others can use it.

Why can’t I download or print HathiTrust ebooks?

These items may be protected by copyright law but are made available as Temporary Access while physical access to the library is limited. No further reproduction or distribution is permitted by any means without the permission of the copyright holder.

Who can use HathiTrust ebooks?

"Temporary Access" books can be accessed only by BC students, staff, and faculty. Unfortunately, this service is not available to alumni or guests.

My disability prevents me from using the online version, can you accommodate me?

Yes. Please register with the BC Disability Services Office (for students) or the BC Office of Institutional Diversity (for faculty and staff) to ensure you qualify.

Once you are registered, contact the Boston College HathiTrust access group to request access to print copies.

When will access to these online versions stop?

When BC Libraries fully resume normal operations, we will no longer qualify for Emergency Temporary Access, and this service will be turned off.

Can you share usage and coverage data?

What is HathiTrust?

HathiTrust is a not-for-profit collaborative of academic and research libraries preserving 17+ million digitized items. HathiTrust offers reading access to the fullest extent allowable by U.S. copyright law, computational access to the entire corpus for scholarly research, and other emerging services based on the combined collection. As a member of HathiTrust, Boston College helps steward the collection.

I still have a question.

Ask us or contact your subject librarian.
