What is a treatise?
A treatise is a work which aims to cover the topic comprehensively. Individual chapters are authored by recognized authorities in the field, tend to be quite lengthy, and carry an extensive list of references. An important series, with individual volumes (or series of volumes) devoted to comprehensive in-depth discussion of particular functional groups. Sometimes referred to as "Patai". - Methoden der organischen Chemie (Houben-Weyl), 4th ed. Thieme: Stuttgart, Germany:, 1952 - 2003. (O'Neill Reference QD258 .M44) Despite its daunting size and language (older volumes are in German), this is a foundation reference tool for synthetic chemistry, offering detailed experimental procedures comprehensively and critically evaluated.
