Is it our duty or obligation to serve others in a volunteer sense? Inspired by Prof McMenamin's PULSE class

There are many ways to look at this question, and so it is not easy to give a definitive answer on whether it is our duty or whether it is a choice we make. One way is through the lens of conscience and moral principle, a second is through virtue, and a third is through the idea of common good. Through one’s conscience, one can judge a situation and choose what is reasonable (right) paired with fundamental moral principles such as the Golden Rule: Do unto others, as you would have them do to you, or, love your neighbor as yourself. Making a moral judgment in relation to cardinal virtues such as prudence, justice, courage, and temperance is another way. The duties of justice may be positive actions, for example to relieve poverty for love of one’s neighbor. The common good is associated with living in community, with each dependent on the other. This idea also includes willing the wellbeing of all members of the community. To learn more about these ideas, see bit.ly/dutyandlove
