SOCY 2210: Research Methods

:

Google Scholar versus Soc Abstracts

This guide was designed to provide research tips for students taking Research Methods with Professor Sarah Babb.

Why use Google Scholar?

  • It searches for scholarly journals, book chapters, and conference papers from across different academic disciplines.
  • You can set it up so that it will link you to BC's journal holdings.
  • It includes information about how often a work has been cited by others, and links you to these citations.
  • You can use it with RefWorks, a tool for saving citations and creating bibliographies.

Why use Sociological Abstracts?

  • It searches a defined set of publications that are important to sociologists.
  • You can limit your search to peer-reviewed articles.
  • Each citation will include a list of keywords that will describe the topics covered in the article.
  • You can use it in RefWorks, a tool for saving citations and creating bibliographies.
  • Each journal citation often includes a list of references that the article has cited. Occasionally, the citations will include information on how many times an article has been cited.
