Black Studies Center brings together essential historical and current material for researching the past, present and future of African-Americans, the wider African Diaspora, and Africa itself. It is comprised of the Schomburg Studies on the Black Experience, the International Index to Black Periodicals (IIBP), The Chicago Defender, ProQuest Dissertations for Black Studies, and the Black Literature Index.
OAASC database is a comprehensive compendium focusing on the "lives and events which have shaped African American and African history and culture".

This guide provides carefully selected lists of the most important publications across the spectrum of African-American history. In addition to chapters on historical research aids, there are chronological chapters (e.g., 1492-1690, 1690-1772 up to 1968-1999) and chapters on the histories of special subjects (e.g., women, government, family and society, religion, education, thought and expression, work and entrepreneurial activity, science and technology, and medicine and health). There are also sections on regional studies, state and local studies, and autobiography and biography. The essays include citations to books, book chapters, journal articles and other types of publications.
